Proteins

What are the basic functions of proteins?
Tissue building – anabolism

Cell functioning- as enzymes

- Body functioning- as hormones – 90% made by proteins

-   Immune function, especially glutamine

-Energy source (very little contributor)

 How much protein do we need in our diet?

Sedentary individual - 0.8g/kg of body mass

Strength athlete - 1.4-2g/kg

Endurance athlete- 1.2-2g/kg

"Team sport" athlete - 1.2=1.6g/kg

Weight gain/loss - 1.6-2g/kg

What is protein made of..?

A protein is created when two, 3, 4, 10 or more amino acids link and form a peptide bond

All amino acids are a complex chemical structure containing:

-Carbon

-Hydrogen

-Oxygen

-Nitrogen

-Essential amino acids

            (1) 9 for children

            (2) 8 for normal adult 

                        - Adult can make histidine

 -Nonessential amino acid

            (1) 11 for children

            (2) 11 for normal adult

 Complete proteins or higher quality proteins:

            -            Foods containing all of the essential amino acids

Incomplete proteins or a lower-quality protein:

            -            Lacks of one or more essential amino acids.

            -            All plant products are incomplete proteins.
